Kommentar

Jag blev upprörd över en kommentar på det här inlägget hos Womanist Musings om en trans kvinna i ett fängelse för män, som lyder:

"Hmm well it is too bad about this woman, however, everyone seems to miss the fact that he / she committed a crime that resulted in prison. Maybe if transgenders do not want to be "treated unfairly" they should refrain from criminal behavior. Less mercy on ALL prisoners just may result is less prisoners."

What do you mean he/she? She's a she.

"maybe if transgenders do not wanted to be treated unfairly they should refrain from criminal behavior"

Are you kidding me? I've never done a criminal act in my entire life, how come people are still treating me unfairly as a trans person? Sounds like you're basically saying that we''re the cause of our own oppression. It makes me mad, it is so othering, you're telling me, (being a trans person) in a condescending tone that maybe I should behave nicely, if I want people to respect my gender (maybe that is not what you mean, but that is what it sounds like, and I have hard to interpret it another way). As if that is the problem here.

The problem is that they are letting her stay in a male prison, putting her at risk and also saying that her gender identity is illegitimate , and thereby indirectly saying that all transgender people's (at least those who haven't done SRS) gender identities are illegitimate. It is a part of society's overall transphobia, by making it so hard to get the right gender in our identification, and to respect our identities, regardless of the circumstances (I've heard at least one person tell me, that just because they had a quarrel with someone, suddenly that person started to use wrong pronouns and name deliberately, guess how that feels, that some cis people will accept our "flight of fancy" and call us what we've asked them to, but only if we always act like some kind of angels and always behave perfectly).

Would you say the same if it was a cis woman placed in a male prison, that "maybe she shouldn't have done the crime in the first place then"?. If not, then you've shown that you don't respect her identity as a woman.

She's not getting any sympathy from me for the crimes she did, though.
